Response to Music Philosophy Debate #1

Amy Duncan – I agree with Michelle that “sadness” and “happiness” in music are cultural. I’m an American living in Brazil and have also lived in Mexico and I’ve noticed that in these places minor keys are not necessarily thought of as being “sad.”

  1. And yet mariachi music is one of the most emotional expressions of art there is in music. Like the blues, mariachi songs speak about life experiences, lost love, found love, tragedy. And the music has its share of “sad” notes, mostly flattened melodies played via trumpet.
